We had this very problem. Our skin became uncomfortable, we put lotions on and washed more often to kill germs. It cracked and we put more lotion on and then it burned too! The cracks bled, so we washed more to fight infection. Then we put more lotion on, and it burned some more. Sound familiar?
Many of the products on the market designed to keep our skin clean and healthy miss the target. They clean all right—too well! Many of these products have detergents in them that act by dissolving oils and dirt, and get right down into the pores of our skin to do this. They take away too much of our skin’s natural moisture and oils that protect it.

The most telltale sign that we were still using the wrong products was this: One day, as I stepped out of the shower and began to dry off, I felt my skin drying and tightening, and already beginning to hurt. I was using some body wash that claimed to moisturize at the time. I felt like it never completely rinsed off. As I went through the ritual of replacing the oils I had just stripped off my skin, it dawned on me: getting clean is one thing, but do I really need to have every last bit of protective oil and moisture dissolved away? I’m a human being, not a greasy engine block!
I checked the ingredients on the label and actually looked
them up on the web. The purpose for including some of the ingredients was to
make the product more appealing to customers, but had nothing to do with caring
for their skin. Some made the product foam more, some made it thicker to pour,
some were preservatives to extend shelf life, some added color to the product
itself, but not the foam or to your skin. Some kept the product from separating
like salad dressing (oil and vinegar in layers in the bottle!).
I had read enough. I wanted something simpler that all of the chemicals whose names I couldn’t pronounce. And that’s how our soap was born!
